Thoughts on Valentine’s Day
You know it’s coming. On 14th February, without fail. There are certain rituals to be observed. The anticipation. The card writing. The mobile phone switched on around the clock, just in case. The email being checked ten times every hour. Was that the doorbell?
And then, perhaps, comes the disappointment. May be there was no card this year, and no bunch of flowers, let alone a date. Valentine’s day can be one of the hardest days in the year to be on your own.
I have been there, and I think most of us have at one time or another. But there is hope, and there is something we can do to make it better. If you find yourself on your own on Valentine’s Day, let that be the first day to make real changes in your life. Reach out, do not wait that someone reaches out to you first. Do not say ‘I am too busy for a relationship, I have to do so many other things, my days are too short as it is’. Remember, busy people need support and who can give support better than the right partner to share their life with them? We all need someone to share our thoughts and our problems, and to enjoy the good things we come across every day. ‘Did you see that smile? Look, isn’t that funny?’ – small things that can lead to something bigger if we allow this to happen.
I sometimes wonder why so many of us seem to go through life on their own, busy with being busy, always rushing, not connecting. Perhaps we are used to perfection in all other aspects of our lives so that we expect no less than perfection from love? Or perhaps we have been hurt or disappointed in the past and do not want to run any risks? Whatever it is that is holding us back, we have so much to gain by letting love and trust back into our life.
Go on, celebrate your independence and be proud of what you have achieved in life. But remember, we are stronger when we have someone who shares our hopes and dreams and who makes us feel that all is well.
