HAIR LOSS AND ITS EFFECTS
Let’s face it, hair loss is something we don’t want to think about. Whatever country or culture we live in our hair symbolizes many things. For women it is sometimes called our ‘crowning glory’ and we see it as a sign of femininity, beauty and sex appeal.
Sadly, every year thousands of women lose their hair for many different reasons such as a result of alopecia or chemotherapy treatment. It could be as a result of stress or medications and quite commonly, because of hormonal imbalances which can show up at puberty, pregnancy, as a result of using oral contraceptives or during the menopause.
You might not think about how important your hair is until you face losing it. If you are about to undergo medical treatments for cancer, the chance of hair loss is very real and is one of the side effects feared most after being diagnosed with cancer.
Imagine the impact and devastation when this happens at whatever age.
Losing their hair is not easy for men but the effects to women are even more. The psychological and emotional stress that women suffer when they start losing their hair is completely damaging. Losing their ‘crowning glory’ is demoralizing for many women and can have dramatic feelings of loss of self esteem, self confidence and body image. Losing their hair can cause very strong emotions such as anger and depression and can make the woman feel vulnerable and exposed. It’s not just the vanity that makes losing your hair so emotional, it’s going public with it before you are ready to.
When the idea of Dinah’s Scarves (www.dinahsscarves.co.uk) was born, it was because Dinah herself had felt her dignity being stripped away when she started losing her hair and we wanted to help other women experiencing the same emotions to still feel feminine and beautiful and to help them realize that although their own personal feelings of loss were normal, we could help them to still feel positive about their looks. As tough as losing their hair could be, our scarves could make it possible to take back a little control.
With Dinah working as Quality Controller with our Designer, Sarah Brooks, we now have the beautiful made to measure Classic and Mini Classic scarves to offer. These are fabulous because they are not just a secure fit but they cover so stylishly that tell tale part of the back of the neck that shows a woman has no hair. The fabrics also have a lot to do with it as they are soft and cool next to the skin and easy to care for.
The Beanies and Night Caps are also proving popular. The Night Cap is soft and luxurious and is recommended to ladies to wear at night before they start their treatments so they don’t have to go through the trauma of waking up finding all their hair over their pillows. Something else we don’t think about is how cold a bald head gets at night in the cold weather.
There are many different approaches that can be taken for coping with hair loss. For many women, preparation is the most effective. You may ask, is there really a way to prepare for this? Actually there is.
Even if you buy a wig, you will need some type of head covering for when you are not wearing your wig, especially in chilly and windy weather. Your scalp will most likely be sensitive when not covered, not to mention cold in the winter or liable to burn in the summer sun.
Now is the time to focus on your wardrobe and your accessories. Get your friends and family to share your experience of developing self image techniques. Since launching Dinah’s Scarves it has been wonderful to watch how supportive women are to each other. We have friends buying scarves for friends, daughters buying for mothers, sisters buying for sisters and mothers buying for daughters. Because the scarves can be worn by everyone (they are not just for ladies who lose their hair) many are buying one for their loved one and one for themselves. How supportive is that!
Have fun playing with make up and learning new techniques that draw attention to your eyes, cheekbones and lips. This helps to direct attention to your face and away from your hair.
Jewellery also changes the focus. Necklaces and chains are great for emphasizing your neckline and earrings will give you the finishing touch. We can also offer a fabulous range to browse through with the Miglio designer jewellery from South Africa.
Whatever your emotions are regarding hair loss, remember it might change your appearance but it can’t change the fact that you are still that wonderful you.
