The F Plate has been uniquely designed to be displayed on the back and front of vehicles following a funeral procession. This will alert other road users that any vehicle displaying the plates are together and allow them to show respect.
I am a Funeral Director, its not my problem if mourners want to get to the service altogether they should have more of my official cars. Funeral Director - London

I think it is an excellent idea, I know when we were in a procession to bury my dad, we were obviously driving really slowly and got beeped and given the V sign which was extremely upsetting, if these plates were around, hopefully people would understand and have a bit of sympathy and patience. I think this could be a good idea - I was once in a car that was following a funeral procession and a couple of other cars cut in front. I think it is respectful to allow all members of that procession to arrive at the destination together. I appreciate that at the moment if you are just in a car that is following it is hard to tell whether you are actually with the procession or just happen to behind it. A very caring idea - it would relieve a lot of extra heartache for a time when emotions are running high. Stress and driving are not a good combination, so this would help other road users to be more aware and give them the opportunity to assist. The problem is that 'F' is not very universal and won't work for foreign drivers etc. who will be driving in Britain. There is not a colour such as the 'L' plates are usually red or fairly obvious that they're learners even if you're at a foreign country. It should be a more common sign for this. Although it sounds good in principal I don't think that it will make any difference as people will still end up getting separated from the procession regardless of whether the procession has F plates on due to having to go over roundabouts or crossings etc.. A.Turner Milton keynes

I think this is a great idea. Being detached from the cortege has happened to me and is very stressful, letting other drivers know in this way is subtle and unobtrusive, but perhaps it could look a little more different to an "L" or "P" plate?

There is universal lack of respect for funeral corteges of any sort. Gone are the days when passers by would stop and bow their heads in a mark of respect. I think the plates are a good idea - anything that helps to stop people in their tracks and have some respect is a good thing...
It's a good idea in principle, I know that people will over take slow moving traffic not realising there is a hearse in front. I'm not sure it is a money making idea though unfortunately and there are always numpties that will try to overtake regardless! Jenny Langley

Whilst an excellent theory for the majority there will always be a minority who will not respect anything.
Although an interesting idea, having an F plate detracts somewhat from the elegance most would wish to arrive at a funeral in, it is a very sensitive occasion

I think any device that helps people to cope with the terrible pain of loss is a great idea and it seems a cheap and easy way to help. It would be great if there isn't the nightmare of more forms to fill out in order to display it because it defeats the purpose of causing less stress for mourners.

I think it is a good idea, but the plate would need to be more widely advertised to ensure that all road users were aware of what it represented - otherwise they might not show the considerate behaviour that is appropriate to the circumstances.

I honestly had no clue what to do when I saw a Funeral procession. This isn't something they teach you in when learning to Drive. I think The F Plate is a great Idea, when you see a F Plate show Respect.
I know that some Funeral procession's leave their lights on, however technology has altered the meaning of headlights on during the day, so many cars have daytime running lights. They have become so commonplace many people don't even notice it. If this is the distinguishing factor for a funeral procession, it is difficult to differentiate the procession. I often don't even realize it's a procession until I see the hearse and I still don't know what cars are following so this is a good Idea.

This is a fantastic idea, I know how stressful it is burying a loved one, I can remember the day of my brothers funeral there was not enough room in the funeral cars for my partner and my 4 week old son, so I had asked them to go on ahead of the cars and I would meet them at the church. To have a universal plate then could have meant they were able to drive behind the cars without fear of being left behind. I know it seems like such a small thing but anything that takes some stress out of such a traumatic day is a good thing.

I THINK THIS IS A REALLY GOOD IDEA. IM SADLY TO SAY I HAD TO GO TO MY MOTHERS FUNERAL RECENTLY AFTER HER SUDDEN DEATH. THERE WERE ABOUT 8 CARS FOLLOWING THE HEARSE AND PEOPLE WERE CUTTING IN AND I FIND IT REALLY DISRESPECTFUL. THE F PLATE IS A REALLY BRILLIANT IDEA AND SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE FOLLOWING THE HEARSE.

Good idea, I've been separated from a procession before in heavy traffic - the only 'recognised' method at the moment is to have your headlights on to signify you're part of the pack, but not everyone is wise to it. The F plates would require heavy publicity for people to know what they were though - the hearse ought to be a clue, but there are some tremendously dense people out there!

In Liverpool it's an unwritten law that everyone gives way to a funeral procession and we also carry on through the red lights if they change. Think The F plate is a good idea though. But the down side is that the government will probably think it's a good money spinner!!!! M T - Liverpool

I think the f plate is an excellent idea to keep the procession together. When my dad died, we all left my house together to travel the 20 miles but ended up arriving separately. I really think at a sad time like this it would be much better for people to arrive together so that they can support one another.

Many people are in a state of physical and emotional shock which leaves them feeling very distressed. As the 'final farewell' a funeral is an extremely important part of the grieving process, any disruption can cause very high levels of emotional distress and long term depression.

Too many times I have accidentally separated a funeral procession and passed a funeral site without realising and felt awful about not having paid more respects, and felt awful about not having turning my radio down so as not to disturb. I think this is a wonderful idea, giving motorists the chance to show their respects and to also alleviate a little of the pressure on the mourners. I hope to see it in production soon. Miss K

I hope people will respect this plate. My son is learning to drive and some people just ignore the rather obvious L plates and driving school signs when driving beside him and drive carelessly and dangerously. They seem to forget that they once had to learn too. Not that you'd believe some of them had ever passed a driving test!

It's a good idea - especially for long processions as its not always clear for other road users how many cars are part of the procession.
In principle a good idea - being the cynic I am, and having seen drivers leapfrog into funeral corteges for the sheer sake of saving a few seconds (particularly in the London area) it's getting some other road users to observe this that will be the hard part - but in principle a good idea. I think this idea is good. It would be extremely valuable to help people find their way to funeral venue especially if they are from out of town, they can follow the 'F' plate in front. Funerals can be an extremely emotional time for people and if other road users are aware if this it may make them more courteous.
I don't think that this will make a difference to people driving in front of or behind funeral cars because of peoples hectic lifestyles, in fact it might be more dangerous where people will pull out earlier in front of a precession like they do with learner drivers at present. It is a good idea but I don't think it will make a difference with drivers. VC Hertfordshire

Who came up with this great Idea?
Whilst I appreciate the sentiment behind the plates, I doubt if they would work simply because too many people would be unaware of their meaning. It also seems likely (speaking as a non-driver) that the most boorish disrespectful drivers are the ones who would be most likely to ignore it anyway. Burt saying all that, I don't see it can do any harm, and in some areas where it became familiar, it could work.
I think this is a wonderful idea, sometimes I wonder if other road users knew a group of cars were all together for a funeral that they would treat them better and not be so impatient towards them. Something like this would show others that respect is needed, to be honest, I cant think why no-one has thought of it before! K - Southampton

What a lovely idea, I hate looking intently at people in funeral processions to see if they are wearing black and are therefore part of the procession in front of them. This will mean you can just look at back of car. But...would people really want to put one on their car?
I think this is a very good idea, but will need a good promotional campaign in order for all road users to understand what it means. We do need a little more patience with our fellow drivers, as well as a bit more respect!
I do not think that it would work. People lead such rushed lives and respect for the dead is something that is not shown in many forms. Whilst travelling to my nana's funeral in one of the family cars directly behind the coffin, I witnessed a show of respect that will stay with me forever. An older gentleman tending to the flower beds situated on a roundabout, stood up, stopped work, removed his cap and put his head down as a mark of respect for a lady he never knew. That to me is what we need to restore in the young. L T

This is a marvellous Idea. I think that when you lose someone, you feel as if the world just carries on regardless, even when you have found that yours isn't. It would be a great show of respect and help mourners to keep their dignity in a time of loss.
I think it's a good idea. It will tell people that you are all together for a Funeral. I have been to one before where I had been cut up, and lost the driver in front. I ended up late to the funeral as I got lost. Miss R
