About The Girl

Mum of two, Amy Bath, was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a mastectomy in 2007.

Amy was diagnosed after a vivid dream that she had breast cancer.

She says “ I usually don’t remember my dreams but the dream seemed so real that I immediately checked my breast and felt that something didn’t feel quite right about my breast. I was so

concerned that I decide to visit my GP and after a mammogram, scan and biopsy at my local

hospital. I was devastated to be diagnosed with breast cancer. It felt like it was all happening to someone else, it couldn’t be real.

After a lumpectomy it was discovered that the cancer was more extensive than expected and had spread to my lymph nodes so I was advised to have a mastectomy and complete lymph node

removal.

I was shocked and scared that at the age of 40 I needed a mastectomy and wasn’t sure what to expect. I took a topless photo of myself, so that I would remember how I looked with both breasts.

After the surgery it took so much courage to look at myself. My scar was angry and raw with marks where the drainage tubes had been and I wondered if I would ever be able to accept my lopsided body.

After chemotherapy and radiotherapy, my self-confidence had reached rock bottom, my hair had all fallen out and I felt ugly. And to top it

all, I couldn’t wear my sexy bras. Before my surgery, I loved to wear feminine pretty bras and I couldn’t find anything that made me feel attractive again. Finally after searching the Internet, I found some beautiful French mastectomy lingerie and realised that other women

would love to be able to wear such lovely lingerie.

I persuaded the company to let me sell their lingerie and set up my website www.aboutthegirl.co.uk The business now also sells fashionable swimwear and my first collection of beautiful silk mastectomy lingerie will be available soon.

Its now three years since my mastectomy and I am healthy and happy. I have grown to accept my new shape and the journey I have

travelled.”
